Death of Children in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland

A few years back I read an article that broke my heart, the story was reporting that the remains of children found at the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Galway, Ireland. Over the past two years an investigation has been conducted and it has been found that there were 796 children who died, at this one home, between 1925 and 1960.1  Sadly, the article tells us that the mortality rate for this home is double what the other mother and baby homes were for that time period.

Though this story does not have much to do with the research of the O’CONNELL family I had decided to go through the list of children who died to see if any of them carried the O’CONNELL surname (or any of the name variants). Sadly, I was wrong in thinking this had nothing to do with the O’CONNELL name. I found too many children on the list with a variant of the name.
